Always Store Any Avulsed Tooth in Milk Until You Get to Our Office

Posted on 1/1/2026 by Bethany - Marketing
Person's hand pouring milk. Losing a permanent tooth due to an accident can be scary. But knowing what to do right away can make a huge difference in saving that tooth. One of the most important steps? Keeping the tooth moist, and milk is your best friend in this situation!

Why Milk?

Milk isn't just good with cookies; it's also great for your teeth! When a tooth gets knocked out (we call this an avulsed tooth), the cells on the root surface start to dry out. These cells are crucial for reattaching the tooth back into your jaw. Milk helps keep these cells alive because it has nutrients that are similar to what's naturally found in your mouth. Water can damage these cells, and letting the tooth dry out is even worse. Milk is like a little life-support system for your tooth!

What To Do Immediately After a Tooth is Knocked Out

First things first: stay calm! Here's a quick guide:
1~ Find the tooth. Pick it up by the crown (the part you normally see). Avoid touching the root.
2~ If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline. Don't scrub it or use soap.
3~ Try to put the tooth back in its socket, if possible. Gently push it in with your fingers or by biting down softly on a clean cloth.
4~ If you can't put the tooth back in, place it in a container of milk. If milk isn't available, use saline solution or, as a last resort, keep the tooth moist in the mouth between the cheek and gums (but be careful not to swallow it!).
5~ Get to our office right away! Time is of the essence.

Why Speed Matters

The sooner you get to us, the better the chances of saving the tooth. The cells on the root surface only stay alive for a limited time. The longer the tooth is out of the mouth and dry, the lower the chances of successful reimplantation.

What Happens at the Office?

When you arrive, we'll carefully examine the tooth and the socket. We'll gently clean the area and, if possible, replant the tooth. We'll then stabilize the tooth with a splint to hold it in place while it heals. You'll need to follow our instructions carefully for oral care, including using a special mouthwash and eating dental friendly foods.

Long-Term Care

Even if the tooth is successfully replanted, it will need long-term monitoring. Root canal treatment may be necessary later on. We'll also teach you how to protect your teeth in the future and reinforce the importance of prevention dentistry. Regular check-ups are critical to make sure everything is healing properly and to address any potential problems early on.

Prevention is Key

While accidents happen, there are things you can do to minimize the risk of losing a tooth. Wearing a mouthguard during sports is essential. Good oral care habits, including brushing and flossing, also help keep your teeth strong and healthy.
