Dos and Don'ts of Teeth Brushing

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Elmwood Dental Group
Dos and Don'ts of Teeth BrushingLet's go back to the basics - brushing your teeth in the morning and avoiding eating foods that stain your teeth. As part of your daily routine, it's important to maintain your teeth by brushing, mouthwash and flossing. Sure, we all started brushing the moment we could hold a toothbrush. However, what you didn't realize then and don't know is there's a right and wrong way to go about doing it.

First, we recommend that you visit Elmwood Dental and get a full dental checkup from Dr. Gomes or Dr. Patel. Once you receive your clean bill of health, you can follow the below mentioned dos and don'ts to make sure that your smile remains healthy.

•  Do Use Fluoride Toothpaste: Fluoride is a mineral that helps protect your teeth against cavities. Moreover, it strengthens your teeth and maintains a good environment in your mouth, eliminating bad breath and dry mouth.
•  Do Use a Medium-Sized and Soft Toothbrush: Make sure that the toothbrush you pick has soft bristles and the idle size that fits in your mouth. This will help you reach the back teeth and clean them more effectively.
•  Do Brush for 2 Minutes Straight: Dentists recommend that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes. This includes brushing the front teeth (inside and out), side teeth, and back teeth.
•  DoReplace Your Brush After Every 3 Months: ADA recommends replacing your toothbrush 4 times a year. After a while, the brush loses its effectiveness and makes the bristles hard. This causes bleeding gums and accelerates the transformation of plaque into tartar.
•  Don't Brush Right After Eating: The acid that releases when food mixes with saliva softens the enamel. Brushing now will strip away the protective layer from your teeth and make them vulnerable to cavities. Rinse your mouth with water instead and have sugar-free gum.
•  Don't Forget to Scrape Your Tongue: Bacteria also reside on tongues, so after brushing your teeth, give your tongue a thorough scraping.
•  Don't Forget to Floss After Meal: Flossing is a great way to keep your mouth free of bacteria that occurs from leftover food particles.
•  Don't Brush Aggressively: Use gentle pressure and circular motions to brush your teeth. The lighter your hand, the better your gums will fare.

Are you ready to change your daily brushing routine? The change will astound you because your teeth will look brighter and healthier. To schedule your dental checkup with Dr. Gomes or Dr. Patel, call at (833) 432-1457.
