Do Root Canals Provide Benefits?

Do Root Canals Provide Benefits?A root canal is a dental procedure used to save a badly decayed tooth, infected, or damaged from a trauma situation. If the tooth has a large filling or has had repeated dental procedures, this tooth may be a candidate for a root canal as well. When the tooth nerve and pulp become irritated or infected, a root canal may be an appropriate treatment. If a tooth has a deep crack or chip, we may consider a root canal, but this would be individual. Root canals have many benefits.

Benefits of a Root Canal

A root canal is a procedure where the nerve and pulp of the tooth are removed, and the outer shell of the tooth remains. The inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. The nerve of the tooth is removed as well. Your toothache should dissipate once the nerves are removed. A root canal does not affect how the tooth functions. The tooth pulp is also removed. The tooth pulp is the innermost layer of the tooth. It contains blood vessels, tissues, and nerves. If the tooth is damaged, the pulp can become exposed and susceptible to infection.

Root canals are beneficial because you can remove the bacteria inside the tooth that may be causing the toothache. At the same time, the tooth is sealed with a filling which provides an aesthetically pleasing facade for the tooth. With the root canal, you do not have to worry about losing a tooth or having a gap between your teeth.
