Halitosis Causes and Treatment

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Elmwood Dental Group
Halitosis Causes and TreatmentDo you have bad breath? You are not alone. Nearly half of all adults have bad breath at some point. Bad breath or halitosis can be caused by various things, from poor oral hygiene to certain medical conditions. Here are the causes and treatments to know about.

Causes of Halitosis

There are many potential causes of halitosis or bad breath. Some of the most common include improper oral hygiene, certain health conditions and medications, and poor diet. Poor dental hygiene is the most common cause of bad breath since bacteria in the mouth can produce volatile sulfur compounds that lead to an unpleasant odor. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, gum disease, and respiratory infections can also contribute to bad breath by changing the mouth's pH or disrupting standard respiration patterns. Additionally, certain medications can produce a dry mouth or change urine or saliva pH levels, leading to malodorous breath.

Treatments for Halitosis

Halitosis can often be treated with simple lifestyle changes. Brushing and flossing regularly is the best way to remove food particles and bacteria from the mouth and using a tongue scraper can also help reduce bad breath. In addition, drinking plenty of water and avoiding foods that cause dry mouths, such as alcohol and caffeine, can help to keep the mouth moist and prevent the growth of bacteria. Sucking on any hard candy or chewing gum can also increase saliva production and help to reduce bad breath. If lifestyle changes do not improve halitosis, several medical treatments can be effective. Medications that target the bacteria that cause bad breath, such as mouthwashes and toothpaste, can be helpful, and some people may also need to take antibiotics. In severe cases of halitosis, surgery may be necessary to remove the source of the problem.
