Every day, you squeeze a pea-sized toothpaste over your toothbrush during brushing but do you know the ingredients contained in the toothpaste. Although most brands have specific ingredients added to their toothpaste to lure customers into the products, there are standard products in most toothpaste. The article articulates the different ingredients in most toothpaste that promote good dental health.
Fluoride
Fluoride is a compound known for preventing infections in the tooth cavity. The compound is associated with strengthening properties of the outer covering of the teeth, the enamel. Once the enamel is strengthened, the bacteria-causing cavity is hindered from attacking the teeth. Fluoride makes the teeth significantly resistant to bacteria invasion, and the effects of wear and tears brought about by the accumulation of acidic foods in the mouth. The American Dental Association (ADA) approves toothpaste that contains fluoride in its ingredients as they promote proper dental care.
Abrasives
These are inactive ingredients in the toothpaste associated with removing food particles and stains from the teeth. While in ancient times, abrasives such as crushed eggshells were used, in modern society, calcium carbonate and hydrated aluminum oxides are commonly used in most toothpaste as abrasives. The primary role of the abrasives in toothpaste is to scrub and polish teeth surfaces without damaging the enamel. Consequently, we recommend soft bristles and gently brushing your teeth to avoid damaging your teeth.
Flavors
From their pronunciation, flavors bring forth a pleasant taste in the toothpaste. Although they come from sweetening agents such as sorbitol, they do not necessarily contain sugars that may pose risks of tooth decay and cavity infections.
Humectants
Humectants are ingredients that ensure your toothpaste remains in a semi-liquid state, hindering it from drying out. The common humectant used in most toothpaste is sorbitol which ensures your toothpaste squeezes out of the tube in paste form.
